$21.00

In her debut book, The Enlisted, The Price of Service No One Tells You, Pearson sheds light on the tough realities she faced as a black, enlisted woman serving in the U.S. Navy, and draws attention to what other young women are sure to encounter.

In her book, Pearson recounts her long, often unbearable, days spent in the middle of the ocean on both a destroyer and aircraft carrier during her two deployments. She gives readers a close-up glimpse into the treatment she and other women sailors were trying to “cope with and maneuver in a field that draws us in with alluring promise, but reluctantly welcomed us once we’re officially sworn in.”

Pearson’s book is drawn from a journal she kept during her five years of service in the U.S. Navy and from interviews with women and men who crossed her path during her tours in both Virginia, California, and on the open seas.

    A Must Read
This is a must-read for EVERY PERSON. This book beautifully expresses the hardships of a Black woman in the service, from her first-person point of view, and from first-hand accounts and interviews from other enlisted personnel she served along side of. Anyone who truly wants to know what it’s REALLY like in the military should read this.

    Amazing Read, EYEOPENER
Amazing read. It is so personal and I absolutely loved it. I love a truthful book. EYE OPENER! but there are also empowering lessons scattered throughout this book. This is a must-read , especially for young adults figuring out their future and leaning towards the military.

I’m biased, but this is a great book!
Skyla shares perspectives from herself and others that are unfiltered and deeply personal. From the outside, military service looks rewarding, fulfilling, and satisfying, when the reality is it’s often frustrating, soul-draining, and difficult to a degree that’s hard to appreciate unless you’ve been there. This book takes the reader to sea with the author, where the mundane feels harder than it should be, where leaders too often aren’t who and what they should be, and where individual drive is sometimes the only source of motivation. The sea stories from Skyla and her shipmates show the true emotional, mental, and physical price paid by those who serve our nation. We can never thank her, and the millions like her, enough.

    Highly recommend
Thank you to Skyla who put into words some of the not so glorious moments of being in the Navy, bringing light to issues we face and giving clarity to our family members who may not truly understand our life style.
