Author
Ward Mayfield served as a combat engineer twice in Iraq and once in Afghanistan, completing more than 300 missions clearing routes, and detecting and removing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) from roadways for safe travel by U.S. forces.
Now retired and living in the greater Salt Lake City area in Utah, Ward continually looks for ways to serve others and give back in his community.
In his debut book, Lessons from Uncle Sam, Ward transports his audience from the comfort and safety of their lives to the raw and unpredictable cruelty of war, death, and destruction.
His story both enlightens and uplifts readers as he goes back to his time in war zones as a bomb disposal operator in a battle of wits with the enemy where losing could have meant death. He makes a conscious choice to move forward with his life in spite of the tragedies he has had to face.

First off, I will come right out and say it, I am biased. That being said, this was a difficult book for me to read, but for all the right reasons. The author gets pretty personal with their feelings and fears, it gives the reader a very raw perspective. I loved it, and I'm eternally grateful for the author's experience being shared in this manner. I love you Little Brother!
Lessons from Uncle Sam is an excellent book and I highly recommend it! I was amazed how Ward made me feel like I was right there beside him throughout his whole story. My father fought in Korea and Vietnam and would rarely talk about his experiences of War. Thus, through Ward's writing of his experience I can finally glimpse a little bit of what my father may have gone through. I recommend this book especially to civilians to get a better understanding of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thank you Ward for your bravery in writing this book. My Hope Is that through sharing your story it will also help other veterans and their families heal.
Ward Mayfield has survived a hero's journey, and I don't mean on the front lines. I mean since returning from battle. He has faced physical and mental torment and come out with his sense of humor intact and an urge to tell others his story. He wants to help other veterans in similar situations, and show them that they are not alone. As one who has been there and survived, I feel this excellent book should be read not only by returning veterans, but also by politicians and lawmakers, so that they learn what life on the front line can be like. We all hope they will seek alternatives to war, when the next conflict arises.
This book was hard for me to read because Ward is my nephew. However, it was also an excellent read. Ward is a storyteller and was able to put the trials he and his men went through in a witty and often humorous way. I am so proud of what he has accomplished, and I would recommend this book to anyone. His struggles and accomplishments are an example to others, and he has made a huge impact on so many lives.
