  1. Steven Hildreth, Jr.

As with many well-written terrorism novels, it can sound like a cliché: “ripped from the headlines, it leaves you wondering how it hasn’t happened here yet.” Yet there is no other way to describe “Safe From The War.” The reader gets a snapshot into police work, combat, terror, faith, the humanity and inhumanity of man–all words and phrases that have been swirling in the ether since the 1990s, and most certainly since 9/11. Examining the mundanity that police can face in the course of their work will make you laugh (or chuckle, at the very least). The combat will make your heart race on one page, then break it on the next with the unflinching descriptions of innocent life lost. You will applaud the heroes of the day and seethe with hate for the enemies. The characters come to life with vividness and passion in a narrative that takes time to build up, but once the fuse is lit, the bomb explodes–and every wave of the fallout is described in unrelenting detail. An engaging read that will leave you marked.
